Join Lori Baker as she guides our group through interactive exercises to plan and implement great trainings for our volunteers. Lori is an educational specialist with Fairfax County Public Schools Volunteer Learning Program where she connects adult learners with volunteer tutors.

New Year's Brainstorming Session. Members met at two convenient locations in Arlington and Fairfax to discuss plans, vet new ideas, and learn tips to start the new year off right. Lunch was provided as well!

Camille Bartus, RN, COHN-S, and Certified Occupational Health Nurse and Wellness Specialist for Fairfax County Public Schools presented practical strategies to foster balance and wellness. Participants learned simple tricks that can be used throughout the day to de-stress, regain balance, and re-focus to tackle that to-do list.
September 15, 2011 Matt Nieman, Workplace Lawyer at Jackson Lewis, and Neal Henderson, Program Analyst in the Office of Personnel of the U.S. Navy, talked us through the keys to a great volunteer interview and mastering the screening process from start to finish.
July 21, 2011 Executive Coach Suzanne Keating led the group in a highly interactive process of exploring the aspects of our lives that lead to fulfillment and balance. We were able to define fulfillment and balance, identify values that lead to fulfillment and set goals and commit to "walking the talk."
March 17, 2011 - The Secret of COI: Finding the Ideal Volunteer
James Lawson of AdviCoach presented "The Secret of COI: Finding the IDEAL volunteer(s) You Have Been Looking For!" An interactive seminar helped us find just the right person for that difficult to place position and the individual volunteers for hard-to-do jobs!

Workshop conversations followed a sandwich luncheon provided by NVAVA. Emily Davis served
as the Arlington meeting facilitator while Meagan Butkus and Mandy Guernsey supported the Fairfax location. The
discussion topics were lively and supportive, welcoming this opportunity to exchange ideas as we moved into this
New Year 2011.

This workshop focused on how the process of going through a program evaluation can lead to positive outcomes for your organization and volunteer program. We also explored what funders look for, and how to use the program evaluation process to your benefit in attracting more volunteers to your program.
September 16, 2010 - The Benefits and Challenges of Engaging New Volunteers
Angie Carrera moderated a panel of experts who described ways to prepare for specific volunteers in our programs: Janet Davidson - Volunteer Fairfax Alternative Community Service Program (court-referred volunteers), Heather Hare - Center for Leadership & Community Engagement, George Mason University (student interns), and Tomoko Taguchi - Brain Injury Services, Inc. (persons with disabilities).
